Drilling Starts on The Banks Project

Project on Schedule with Creation of Support Structures

WHAT:

Constructing the support structures for The Banks development will begin today. More than 2,000 auger cast piles (concrete underground columns) will create the foundation to support the first phase of The Banks development.

A 130-foot tall crane will support an auger cast drilling rig that will create the piles through a drilling and filling process. The rig drills into the ground, forms a hole and then fills the hole with grout (a concrete-like mixture) and then uses reinforcing steel to create the pile. The piles will be 16 inches in diameter and go to the bed-rock which is approximately 75 – 90 feet deep. The trade contractor will create approximately 12 piles a day.

The drilling start follows hundreds of design hours spent creating construction plans. On site, preparation for the first phase of the project has included clearing the site of the old Cinergy Field foundation.

The pile construction work that starts today represents approximately 12 percent of the total pile work. Hamilton County and the City of Cincinnati will open up the bids for the balance of the pile work next week. Additional construction packages will be open for bidding over the next four months. Interested contractors can go to www.hamilton-co.org for details.

The development team began work on The Banks on April 2nd, when ground was broken at the site of the first phase of the new Cincinnati riverfront development. The project continues to run on schedule with portions of the first phase to be completed in the spring of 2010. The first phase of the project will create an urban neighborhood with; apartments; restaurants and retail at the street level; office space; the potential for a hotel and for-sale housing; and garages.

The Banks Project is the first of its kind in Cincinnati and will benefit the entire region. In addition to creating a destination where people can live, work, and play, the Banks will be a catalyst for regional economic growth.
